Hiring an EA (executive assistant) has been transformational for me and my work at Svix. Here is a summary of my thoughts about hiring an EA.
TL;DR: if you're a founder and CEO, get an EA. If you're a solo founder, get an EA now.
I resisted hiring an EA for a long time, and I really wish I hadn't. The main reasons I resisted were: I thought I didn't have enough work to delegate, and anyway everything people told me they use EAs for felt really silly. I solved the first part by getting a fractional EA (shout-out to Squared Away, they were great) as it meant that even if I don't have a lot to delegate it's probably fine.
Some of the things people told me they use EAs for email management, calendar management, travel planning, travel booking (flights, hotel, ground transportation), note taking, etc. These either have tools, are very low lift, or just not something I'd want to delegate. There are tools for that, especially now with AI, but even before.
In practice I have a lot:
- Ongoing startup operations (payroll, insurance, etc.)
- Unexpected random things.
- Organizing offsites.
- Chasing invoices and AR
- Accounts payable
- Marketing support (like swag, and stuff like that)
- Organization.
- Chasing people for things (including myself!)
- Dealing with change of plans
- Same for personal stuff (apartment hunt, apartment move, dealing with bills and services, etc.)
- Household management and vendor coordination
- Hiring and vetting cleaners, nannies, and babysitters
- Kids' activity research, enrollment, and scheduling
- School communication and calendar management
- Event planning: birthdays, holidays, dinner parties
- Gift research, purchasing, and shipping
- Personal errand coordination
- Home maintenance scheduling and follow-up
- Pet care coordination: vets, groomers, sitters
- Vacation and family travel planning
- Moving logistics and relocation support
- Restaurant reservations and experience planning
- Home service provider management (electricians, landscapers, etc.)
I'm already busy enough with running the company, and this frees up a lot of my time that can be used for higher leverage activities. And tbh, stuff I enjoy much more.
